Athens and Limestone County's heavy clay soil and frequent storms are hard on gravel driveways. A drive that looked fine last year can wash out, lose its crown, or start sinking into the mud after a single wet season. The right fix depends on what's actually happening underneath — and that's what we assess before recommending any work.

Not every driveway needs to be rebuilt from scratch. The right approach depends on the condition of the base, how well the surface currently drains, and what you plan to use the drive for. Adding gravel on top of a failing base rarely fixes the real problem — it just hides it until the next rain.
When the base is still solid and the grade is sound, a fresh layer of gravel (top-dressing) restores the surface and improves traction. This is the quickest, most cost-effective option — but only works when the foundation underneath is healthy.
Isolated potholes, ruts, and soft spots usually point to a weak or washed-out area in the base. We cut out the failed section, rebuild the base material, regrade, and compact so the repair blends in and holds — rather than just filling the hole with loose stone that sinks again.
A driveway that has lost its crown, developed low spots, or started to hold water often needs to be regraded. We re-establish the correct slope and compaction so water sheds off the surface instead of pooling — which is what causes most ruts and washouts in the first place.
For raw land, a brand-new drive, or extending an existing one, we start from the subgrade up: clearing, shaping the base, installing drainage and culverts where needed, and compacting each layer. This is the right call when there’s no solid base to build on yet.
We’ll assess the existing condition and recommend the option that actually solves the problem — whether that’s a simple top-dressing or a full rebuild.
In Athens, most driveway failures aren't really a gravel problem — they're a water problem. The clay-heavy soil sheds runoff slowly, and a driveway without proper slope or drainage will hold water, soften the base, and develop ruts and washouts no matter how much stone you pile on top.
Before we recommend a repair or rebuild, we look at how water moves across the property and where it ends up. Often the fix is regrading the crown, adding or cleaning out ditches, or installing a properly sized culvert where runoff crosses the drive. When a driveway's problems are part of a bigger water issue on the property, we can also tie the work into our Athens drainage solutions so water is managed before it ever reaches the drive.
The point is simple: fixing the drainage is what makes the repair last. Adding gravel to a driveway that's washing out just buys time until the next storm.
New Gravel Driveway Construction – Cutting a new drive into raw land, from clearing and subgrade prep through final compaction.
Driveway Resurfacing – Adding a fresh layer of gravel over a sound base to restore the surface and improve traction.
Pothole & Rut Repair – Cutting out failed sections, rebuilding the base, and compacting so the repair holds instead of sinking again.
Driveway Reshaping & Regrading – Restoring the crown and slope so water sheds off the surface instead of pooling.
Driveway Extensions – Widening or lengthening an existing drive to add parking or reach a new shop, barn, or pasture.
Access Road Construction – Building long, reliable access to remote sections of your property.
Culvert Placement & Water Control – Installing properly sized culverts and ditches to keep water from undermining the driveway.
Every driveway is different, so we base estimates on the actual conditions of your property rather than a flat per-foot price. Here’s what we look at:
Length & Width – The total area to be built or repaired directly drives material and machine time.
Existing Condition – A solid base that needs resurfacing costs less than one that has to be excavated and rebuilt from the subgrade up.
Equipment Access – Tight entries, steep slopes, or long off-road runs can affect which machines we use and how material is hauled in.
Material Needs – The type and volume of aggregate, plus any geotextile fabric or base material, depends on your soil and the drive’s use.
Drainage Work – Ditches, culverts, and regrading to manage water are often the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that washes out.
We’ll walk the property with you, explain what we find, and give a clear estimate based on the work your driveway actually needs.
